There are various palm species such as Borassus, Areca, Sago, Fish Tail etcetera. For the reason that of their gorgeous composition, numerous of the palms adorn gardens.Although pal trees improve extremely tall, they can also be raised in house gardens or as dwarfs in pots.Just one of the most crucial palm trees is the Sugar palm.Botanically known as Borassus Flabellifer it is broadly distributed in the tropics such as India, Srilanka, South East Asia, New Guinea etcetera.
People today from temperate areas are not much informed of this palm and therefore are not privileged as people of tropics in appreciating the multi fold benefits of this palm. The tree grows upto 30 meters in height, with independent sexes. The feminine trees bear edible fruits of about twenty cm diameter.
More than a lifecycle starting up from fruit to tree, the sugar palm or toddy palm gives six types of edible portions at various phases. The immature or unripe fruits contain 2-three locules, and the locules contain a hydrolyzed carbohydrate which is extremely delicious. (Referred to as ‘munji’ in Telugu language). On maturity the carbs change to hard starch and this starch is not edible. The locules are in hard shells, which are coated by fibrous content, and this fibrous content which was earlier greenish-whitish in coloration and tasteless, accumulates sugar and turns orange-red juicy fibres.
This sweet orange juice with attribute flavor (fruit at this stage known as ‘tati pandu’ in telugu), is blended with flour and baked into cakes. If the ripened fruit is still left untouched, the fruit falls to the ground and the seeds (or locules) create a peg geotropically into the soil. The seed, which has hard starchy content, will get once more hydrolyzed into sugars and can take the variety of semi sound white mass (the seed on ground with peg into the soil at this stage is known as ‘burra gunju’ in telugu). If this stage is not disturbed, the hydrolyzed starch will get transferred through the peg inside the soil and sorts a cotyledon.
Once the transfer of sugars is entire, the cotyledon which measures one-2 cm in thickness and 15-twenty five cm in duration and of conical condition is once more edible (this stage is known as ‘tega’ in Telugu). If this stage is also not harmed, the cotyledon provides increase to a new palm. While the earlier edible phases particularly munji, tati pandu, burra gunju and tega are derived from fruits, there are two other edibles that can be derived from the reserve content saved around the apical bud of the tree. The reserve content which sustains the growth of the tree and much helpful in reproductive stage, is extremely sweet and appears like a cylindrical white part with various layers.
The internal the layer, the sweeter it is (this cylindrical sweet part is known as ‘muvva’ or ‘movvu’ in Telugu. The sixth edible derived is known as the toddy (‘kallu’ in telugu) is derived from this apical bud, by building an incision. From this incision, the liquid foodstuff content that is aspect of the plant’s translocation is tapped and this is an intoxicating and power giving consume.
Aside from the edible employs, there are various other benefits which man has been employing considering that time immemorial. The leaves are used for thatching and building mats. The leaf stalks have tough fibers, which are twined to make tough ropes for making of houses, boats, etcetera. The dried shells, leaf stalks are used as gas. The trunks are used either as are living poles in design of thatch sheds, or as timber in alternative for wooden poles. The trunk of the tree is hollowed, and is instantly used as a boat (known as ‘dhone’ in telugu) for journey and fishing in numerous pieces of the tropics.
Consequently the Sugar Palm or Palmyra Palm or Toddy Palm is unrivalled even in the palm spouse and children, for the multi-fold benefits it presents in its everyday living time at various phases.Apprecating this Indian’s give it the status of ‘son’ for it can take care of them single handedly even in hard moments.
