Rock Creek Canyon from hwy 212

Emerald Lake can be viewed in the base of Rock Creek Canyon, on the lookout west from the Beartooth Pass highway.

One of the ideal drives in the United States. Beartooth highway requires you up superior (ten,947′) with excellent vistas in each and every course more than the Absoroka Beartooth Wilderness.

Very last time throughout the go (September of 2012), I was traveling in the reverse course. I camped on Rock Creek so I could drive the go at dawn. Forest fire smoke, was thick in the space, so the shots on that vacation were not that excellent:

My wife and I have crossed this go several situations in equally instructions and has long been a favorite stretch of highway. There is some record to the go as properly. In 1872 Basic Phil Sheridan was using a “tour inspection” of Yellowstone and crossed Beartooth Pass with 120 males. He ought to have been impressed.

There are lots of alpine lakes together the route, with the look at down to Twin Lakes and throughout Rock Creek Canyon to the Hellroaring Plateau one of the ideal. At the major of the Rock Creek Canyon, you can see Emerald Lake on a apparent day.

Solo street vacation: Backpacking vacation with son Street vacation with wife.
Sunday September 14th through Wednesday September twenty fourth, 2014

On this 11 day vacation I would devote two nights in my backpacking tent in the Wind River Assortment a few nights in a motel home (one in Idaho Falls and two in Salt Lake Metropolis) and five nights sleeping in the again of my pickup truck (which has a cab superior, screened window, canopy on it and a mattress in the again).

There are a few sections to this eleven day vacation, just about every with shots and a tale or two thrown in together the way. Part one is my solo two day “street vacation” from my dwelling in Japanese Washington to Idaho Falls to meet up with my son. Part two is a two evening backpacking vacation my son and I took to the Cirque of Towers at the southern end of Wyoming’s Wind River Assortment (a repeat backpack for me). Part A few is a five day “street vacation” my wife and I took from Salt Lake Metropolis up through Yellowstone, the Canadian Rockies, and again to our dwelling in Japanese Washington.

We strike a lot of clouds and rain on this five day street vacation so there aren’t several photos and no stories to discuss of. We did see some very place and as my wife and I normally do, on a street vacation together, we had a ton of exciting.

If you want to browse the tale of Part One of this street vacation, then open any of the early shots of this photo album, with the shots taken together Idaho’s River of No Return (the Salmon River). If you want to browse the tale of Part TWO of this street vacation of the a few day backpacking vacation, my son and I took to the Cirque of Towers, in Wyoming’s Wind River Assortment – – then open any of individuals shots in the photo album. A “misplaced backpacking pet tale” is involved with Part TWO (Arlo the pink pet). It has a content ending.

Listed here are the final of the shots taken on my eleven day “street vacation”. I hope you get pleasure from some of them.

Part A few (9.20.14. By 9.24.14) ~ Grand Teton NP Yellowstone Western Montana Kananaskis place Banff NP Yoho NP Canada’s Glacier NP Canadian Okanagan and U.S. Okanogan ~ and then dwelling. A exciting street vacation with my wife.
Not several stories to explain to for this street vacation adventure. Weather was the key tale and we obtained much more and much more clouds and then rain as we headed up north. So a several highlights and point out of the campgrounds we slept in just about every evening:
1st on the record was to drive a street in Utah that I hadn’t been on due to the fact I was living in Roy, Utah as a junior superior university student. I desired to see the aspen in fall colour and to see if I remembered anything of the space right after much more than 55 yrs.
We drove Utah highway 39 from Ogden to Woodruff, up more than Monte Cristo Pass. I remembered incredibly little from my boyhood days, but the autumn colors were being impressive. We enjoyed a tailgate picnic there tucked amid the pleasurable fragrance and shiny fall colors of an aspen grove.
We then headed to Grand Teton NP and obtained a camping location at the Gros Ventre campground, a spot I had camped prior to. We camped amid RVs from Texas, that were being towing vehicles worthy of much more than the one we were being camped in the again of, but the folks were being pleasant and courteous, the evening whole of shiny stars. We slept properly.
Up through Grand Teton NP and more than Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone, we next crossed Beartooth Pass at near to 11,000 ft. a favorite drive of ours. The landscapes is normally impressive and we enjoyed the drive. We drove north in Montana, viewing a black bear and a coyote as we approached King Hill summit, on Montana highway 89 amongst White Sulfur Springs and Terrific Falls. We camped at a small forest support campground suitable on the west facet of the summit and for $five (seniors’ fee), slept properly.
Monday 9.22.14 we drove up through Terrific Falls and then to Browning. I had hoped to go to the Plains Indian Museum there (at the recommendation of Flickr contacts from Corvallis, Montana) but it was closed on Sundays and Mondays and it was in deplorable situation with rubbish all more than the spot exterior the making. We moved on.
We crossed into Alberta, Canada at the small “Main Mountain” border crossing, which closes at six pm. We manufactured our way up to Alberta highway 22 and observed the ideal spot we have camped in a long time at the Chain Lakes campground amongst Lundbreck and Longview. Internet site range ninety eight on Loop C. Clear, peaceful, several other campers, and white tail deer for inquisitive camping neighbors. The coyotes howled a chorus at evening. $20 Canadian but like all the Canadian campgrounds we have at any time frequented, flawlessly held and worthy of the rate.
We next headed north for highway forty and the stunning Kananaskis place. We had to gradual down or halt, quite a few situations for open array cattle, as properly as for deer and bighorn sheep, all of whom appeared to have a need to have to stand in the highway at situations. In the case of the bighorn they were being licking the soaked pavement for the salt content.
The rains and clouds increased as we moved north to Banff. Quick stops at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise were being pleasant. We took the Bow Valley Scenic Parkway on the way up and in all honesty I observed that the sights from Trans-Canada 1 to be far better, but it was exciting driving a gradual rate.
Much more scenic stops and we drove the small but “most interesting” route (river landscapes and tight steep street switchbacks) up the Yoho River Valley for the small hike to impressive Takakkaw Falls. This is the third maximum waterfalls in Canada at 836 ft. A awesome hike on a paved path, and a footbridge more than the glacial silt colored, Yoho River, will get you there.
The rain begun selecting up and much more storm clouds moved in very low as we headed west. We crossed Rogers Pass in Canada’s Glacier Nationwide Park, and ducked into a tucked absent campground for the evening. Illecillewaet campground and our web page for the evening (# 55 for $21.50) was backed in suitable towards a tumbling, white water stream. Warning signs at the path head in the vicinity of our camp warned of grizzly bears in the space. So all rest home journeys were being done together with bear spray in hand.
It rained and rained really hard that evening (Tuesday 9.23.14) but we slept warm, dry and comfy in our “again of the pickup truck” camping bed.
We were being equally awake prior to dawn the next day (we were being now in the Pacific time zone once again by a several miles), so we turned the heater on in the truck and closed up the again of the pickup truck and canopy – – and drove off.
The border crossing at Osoyoos Lake, was much more problem filled, than the days prior to 9.11. Nonetheless the customs agents were being successful and pleasant. Passports, of study course, are necessary these days for vehicle vacation amongst countries and perhaps that explains why we observed so several vehicles from the states on this a few day vacation through the Canadian Rockies.
By dinnertime on Wednesday 9.24.14…we were being dwelling. A different exciting filled adventure and excellent memories, which will final several yrs. I hope you get pleasure from the photos, we took, together the way.
